The Roman Catholic Diocese of Laghouat ( French Diocèse de Laghouat , Latin Dioecesis Laghuatensis ) is in Algeria situated Roman Catholic diocese based in Ghardaia .

history

It was founded on July 19, 1901 as the Apostolic Prefecture of Ghardaïa ( lat.Ghardaiensis ) out of the Apostolic Vicariate for the Sahara and Sudan , but changed its name on January 10, 1921 to the Apostolic Prefecture of Ghardaïa nel Sahara (Latin for Ghardaiensis in Sahara ), became an Apostolic Vicariate on June 10, 1948 , before becoming a diocese on September 14, 1995 under the name " Laghouat " ( Dioecesis Laghuatensis ).

In 1950 the 2,107,780 km² diocese had 12,241 believers. Today there are only 2,000 Catholics left, some of whom live in the large desert regions of the Sahara or near the country's oil reserves (0.04% of the population).
