Tamanrasset or Tamanghasset ( Arabic ولاية تمنراست, DMG Wilāyat Tamanrāsat ) is a province ( wilaya ) in southern Algeria . The capital of the province is the city of the same name, Tamanrasset .

The province, the largest in Algeria in terms of area, is located in the Sahara. Parts of the province are occupied by the Ahaggar Mountains. In the southeast of the province there are extensive dune areas in the flatlands of the Chad Basin . In the southeast the province borders on Niger , otherwise on six other provinces: In Guezzam in the south, Bordj Badji Mokhtar and Adrar in the west, In Salah in the north and Illizi and Djanet in the northeast.

The Tamanrasset province is only very sparsely populated with 115,043 inhabitants (as of 2008 as of 2020), the population density is around 0.34 inhabitants per square kilometer. Most of the residents are Tuareg and speak Tamahaq , a Hoggar dialect of the Kel Tamasheq, as the Tuareg also call themselves.

In December 2019, the northern and southern parts of Tamanrasset province were separated and the independent provinces In Salah and In Guezzam were created. The area decreased from 556,185 km² by 219,346 km² (39.4%) and the population of 176,637 inhabitants by 61,594 inhabitants (34.9%). The number of municipalities halved. Before the reform, the province was larger than France .
