Teenage Warning is the debut album by punk band Angelic Upstarts . It was released in 1979 on Warner Bros. Records .
History of origin
The Angelic Upstarts were founded in 1977. After several attempts to market their music in do-it-yourself style and a performance with John Peel , the group was signed by Jimmy Pursey , who negotiated a contract with Polydor for the band . Due to several incidents, however, both Pursey's band Sham 69 and Angelic Upstarts were released from the contract. However, Pursey was able to negotiate a new contract with Warner Bros., who released the single I'm an Upstart in 1979 . Two months later, the debut album Teenage Warning was finally released . A month later, the title song was released as a single. The album was produced by Jimmy Pursey himself. Only The Murder of Liddle Towers (declared on the album as Liddle Towers ) had already been released as an in-house production in May 1978 and was recorded by the band themselves in Impulse Studios in Wallsend .

Background information
The Young Ones is a cover version of Cliff Richard together with The Shadows , which was written in 1961 for the film of the same name (in German: Hello, Mr. Twen ) by Sid Tepper and Roy C. Bennett .
The Murder of Liddle Towers was released in 1978 together with the B-side Police Oppression on the band's own label Dead Records. The 500 edition was panned by the British music press, but was reissued shortly afterwards by the independent labels Rough Trade and Small Wonder . The song is based on the death of the electrician Liddle Towers , who passed away after being released from police custody. The case caused a stir in the UK and was also discussed in the House of Commons .
Music genre
Although the band comes from the punk scene and thanks to The Clash , the Sex Pistols , among others in the credits for the album , Teenage Warning was mainly perceived as one of the albums that paved the way to Oi! and street punk paved. The lyrics of the band, very socially critical and directed against Thatcher , hit the nerve of the English working class. According to Allmusic's Matt Kantor , the album is considered a punk classic that strikes the perfect balance between serious and fun lyrics.
Chart placements
The album placed 29th on the UK music charts and stayed in the charts for a total of seven weeks. The singles I'm an Upstart (place 31/8 weeks) and Teenage Warning (place 29/6 weeks) were able to place in the UK Top 40 .
