biography

Robert Edward McGinnis was born in Cincinnati , Ohio in 1926 and grew up in Wyoming , Ohio.

McGinnis began as an apprentice at Walt Disney Studios , then studied art at Ohio State University . After military service in the merchant navy , he worked in advertising. A chance meeting with Mitchell Haken in 1958 led him to Dell Publishing (former US publisher). There he began his career drawing for a variety of paperback books - including works by Edward S. Aarons , Erle Stanley Gardner , Richard S. Prather , Michael Shayne and Carter Brown .

McGinnis later worked for magazines such as Ladies' Home Journal , Women's Home Companion , Good Housekeeping , TIME , Argosy , Guideposts and The Saturday Evening Post . He was the title designer for the novel Hallelujah Trail (originally: Hallelujah Train ; basis for the western comedy Forty Wagon Westward , 1965).

McGinni's attention to detail was such that when he was instructed to do the artwork for Arabesque , he asked for Sophia Loren's tiger stripe dress to be sent to a model to get a true-to-life impression .

In 1985 McGinnis was named "Romantic Artist of the Year" by Romantic Times Magazine for his many romance covers.

Since 2004, McGinnis has created cover illustrations for the Hard Case Crime paperback series.

McGinnis is the subject of a documentary - Robert McGinnis: … Painting the Last Rose of Summer by Paul Jilbert.

He is a member of the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame.
