The Martin Villa

The Villa Martin is located in the Thuringian state capital Erfurt on the campus of the local university . The seed breeder Franz Martin had the building built in 1923 and 1924 by the Erich Fabianski architect from Erich as a residence for his family. At that time it was still in an undeveloped open landscape on the edge of his gardening business , which extended to the then independent village of Marbach (incorporated into Erfurt in 1950). The villa has a basement, a ground floor and two upper floors and is extremely simple, functional and factual from an architectural point of view. There are only a few decorative elements on the facade, such as floral decorations in the sandstone door arch on the north-west side. After several changes of ownership over time, the university acquired the building, which was no longer in good structural condition, at the end of the 1990s with the aim of establishing the seat of the Catholic Theological Faculty there.

The restoration was carried out under the premise of integrating a large part of the historical building fabric into the new planning and of preserving the basic structure of the villa with its design details. At the same time, a connection between all floors should enable smooth study operations.

The ground floor as the most representative floor of the house now houses the dean's office of the faculty, the offices of the professors and a conference room. During the renovation , the stucco ceilings were renovated , the parquet floors were refurbished with inlay decorations , and the old library was restored and supplemented . The wall cladding with historical sliding doors could also be preserved, whereas some partitions had to be removed. From the staircase with oval vestibule , lead glass windows and coffered wall cladding, an artistically crafted, spacious oak staircase leads to the first floor. There, the former hall now serves as a communication space around which the rooms of the professors and the rooms of the staff are grouped. As an example, the original colors of the rooms have been restored in some places. Both the basement and the attic house additional rooms for the teaching staff as well as so-called secondary functional areas. Newly constructed stairs for their access were built in instead of adjoining rooms that were no longer required.

In December 2004 the renovation of Villa Martin was completed and the building was finally handed over to the Catholic Theological Faculty. Since then, the villa has been an integral part of the campus ensemble of the University of Erfurt - albeit at the southernmost end of the site.
