Joel Daniel Freeland (born February 7, 1987 in Aldershot ) is a retired British basketball player . He is 2.10 m tall and played as a power forward .
career
Joel Freeland only started playing basketball at the age of 16 after he had to give up his aspired football career due to an injury. His first club was Solent Stars , a club from Southampton . In order to make a living, Freeland was working in a supermarket at the time. In summer 2005 he was discovered by a Spanish scout at the U-18 European Championship and signed by CB Gran Canaria for their second team. In the EBA league, the fourth-highest division in Spain, he was able to convince right away and ended the 2005/06 season with 15.2 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. He also proved his talent at the prestigious Reebok Eurocamp in Treviso and in the 2006 NBA Draft the Portland Trail Blazers surprisingly voted him 30th in the first round, although at that time he had not played a single game in the professional squad of the Canaries .
Freeland decided to stay in Spain and made his debut in the ACB league for the first team of CB Gran Canaria on October 15, 2006 against TAU Vitoria . His sporting breakthrough followed in the 2008/09 season, with 10 points and 4.6 points per game, Freeland established himself as one of the best players on his team. In the summer of 2009 he moved to the Spanish top club Unicaja Málaga and was able to prevail right away. On October 22, 2009 he made his Euroleague debut against KK Partizan Belgrade . In the 2009/10 season he led the team statistics of Málaga in the highest European competition on points and rebounds as well as 2010/11 and 2011/12.
In the summer of 2012 Freeland broke his contract with Unicaja and moved to the North American NBA to the Portland Trail Blazers .
After his two-year engagement in the NBA, Freeland moved to Russia for PBK CSKA Moscow . With Moscow, Freeland won the EuroLeague in 2016 and the Eastern European VTB United League in 2016 and 2017 .
National team
Joel Freeland took part in Division A of the 2005 European Championship with England's U-18 team. He made his debut with Great Britain on September 9, 2006 against the Netherlands , in the course of the European Basketball Championship in Division B 2007 , the British were promoted to Division A. At the side of players like Luol Deng and Pops Mensah-Bonsu succeeded Freeland, who contributed an average of 10 points and 5.7 rebounds, qualified for the 2009 European Basketball Championship . In this, however, he remained with his team without a win and failed in the preliminary round. At the 2011 European Basketball Championship , Joel Freeland was again part of the British squad, although his team failed again in the preliminary round, but this time the British won against Portugal and Poland . Joel Freeland was again one of the pillars of his team with 11.2 points and 5.8 rebounds. At the 2012 Summer Olympics Freeland was again a member of the British team, but retired early with just one win in the preliminary round.
