Kornél Dávid

Kornél Dávid (born October 22, 1971 in Nagykanizsa ) is a former Hungarian basketball player .

career

Dávid first played football in his home country and then basketball from the age of 16. He played with Honvéd Budapest , then with Malev SC and from 1990 to 1994 again with Honvéd. In 1994 he won the national championship with the team. From 1994 to 1997 the 2.08 meter tall wing and inside player was under contract with Albacomp Székesfehérvár. Jerry Krause, manager of the Chicago Bulls NBA team, heard from Dávid through liaison officers in Europe and contacted him in June 1997. The Hungarian flew to Chicago for a trial training session. At the beginning of October 1997 he received a one-year contract from the team, but was removed from the squad again before the start of the season. He played a game for the team Rockford Lightning in the US league Continental Basketball Association (CBA) and then went back to Albacomp Székesfehérvár. In 1997/98 he was with the team Hungarian champions, played in 1998/99, initially for Székesfehérvár, before he was signed again in January 1999 by the Chicago Bulls. He made his debut in the NBA and was the first Hungarian to be used in the North American league. Dávid played 50 games for Chicago by the end of the 1998/99 season and scored 6.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per encounter.

In early January 2000, Chicago deleted him from the list, a few days later he signed a contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers , which was limited to ten days. After its expiration, he went back to his home country to Albacomp Székesfehérvár and won the championship title with the team. At the end of August 2000, the Toronto Raptors  signed him, so he succeeded in returning to the NBA, the Canadians gave Dávid in February 2001 as part of a player swap to the Detroit Pistons . In total, the Hungarian was on the field in 109 NBA games until 2001. In the summer of 2001 Dávid applied to the Washington Wizards  again for a contract, but was not committed after the pre-season. The NBA chapter of his career came to an end, Dávid accepted an offer from the French first division club SIG Strasbourg , for which he scored an average of 17.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per encounter in 25 league appearances during the 2001/02 season.

In 2002/03 he was under contract with Zalgiris Kaunas in Lithuania and won the national championship with the team. He also competed with Kaunas in the Euroleague and convinced in 13 appearances with 16.9 points per game. From 2003 to 2006 he wore the colors of the Spanish club TAU Cerámica in the ACB league and in the Euroleague. With TAU he won the Spanish Cup in 2004 and 2006, in the 2004/05 season under coach Duško Ivanović he was the Spanish runner-up and was in the final of the Euroleague, which was lost. The Hungarian achieved the best statistical values ​​of his time at TAU ​​in the 2003/04 game year with 13.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per use.

In the last two years of his professional career (2006/07 and 2007/08) he was  under contract with CB Gran Canaria in Spain. With the national team of his home country Dávid took part in the European Championships in 1999 and 2005.

After the end of his playing career, Dávid was a year and a half with the Cleveland Cavaliers and then from 2009 three years with the Phoenix Suns  as a player judge. In this position he was one of the first representatives of an NBA team in the fall of 2012 that Giannis Antetokounmpo took under the microscope. In 2012, Dávid became chairman of his former team, Albacomp Székesfehérvár.
