The Afghan national basketball team represents Afghanistan in men's international basketball matches. The Afghan Basketball Federation was founded in 1968 as a member of FIBA . The greatest achievement was winning the gold medal at the South Asian Games in 2010 .

history

Basketball was first played in Afghanistan in 1930. In 1966 the Afghan Olympic Committee founded the first Afghan national basketball team. To play against India and Pakistan. Tom Gouttierre, an American Peace Corps volunteer and coach of the Habibia High School team, became the first national coach. In 1969 Gouttierre returned with a Fulbright scholarship and became Habibia coach again, in 1970 Bill Bradley of the New York Knicks coached the team, In that year China challenged the Afghan national team to a game, due to the lack of preparation time Gouttierre decided that the current and former Habibia players who were the best choice for a second Afghan national team. They defeated a much larger Chinese team in Parwan Province, which is considered the Afghan team's first international victory.
