The Sikanni Chief River is the left headwaters of the Fort Nelson River in the Northern Interior of the Canadian province of British Columbia .
The Sikanni Chief River rises northeast of Williston Lake in the Muskwa Ranges in the far north of the Canadian Rocky Mountains . The headwaters are located in the Sikanni Chief River Ecological Reserve . The Sikanni Chief River forms the drain of the Sikanni Chief Lake and initially flows in an easterly direction through the mountains. The British Columbia Highway 97 ( Alaska Highway ) crosses the river halfway between Fort St. John and Fort Nelson . The Buckinghorse River , running to the north, flows a little later on the left into the Sikanni Chief River. The Sikanni Chief River now turns to the north, then again to the east and finally again to the north before it merges with the Fontas River to form the Fort Nelson River.
The Sikanni Chief has a length of about 270 km. Its catchment area covers an estimated 10,000 km². There is a runoff gauge at the bridge of the Alaska Highway over the river.
