The Fontas River is the right-hand headwaters of the Fort Nelson River in the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia .

The Fontas River rises in northwest Alberta not far from the border with British Columbia. It initially flows in a north-northwest direction and crosses the provincial border. It takes the left tributary Kahntah River and turns in the lower reaches to the west. Eventually it meets the Sikanni Chief River coming from the south and together with it forms the Fort Nelson River.
