The Hoofdklasse is a Dutch football league. It was founded in 1974 as the highest amateur league of the KNVB and substructure for the two professional leagues Eredivisie and Eerste Divisie . Since the newly founded top class started playing in 2010 , the hoofd class has been on the 4th level of the league system in Dutch football . In the course of the introduction of professional football in the mid-1950s, Hoofdklasse was the name of the highest (professional) football league in the 1955/56 season, in which the Dutch football champions were played in two groups; in the following season it was replaced by the newly founded Eredivisie.
In 2016 the Hoofdklasse was replaced as the highest amateur league by the newly founded Tweede Divisie . After the top class , which was renamed Derde Divisie in 2016 , the Hoofd class is currently only the third amateur league.
Graduation
As a result of the historically grown denominational particularism ( Verzuiling ) of the Netherlands, the Hoofd class is divided into two departments, the Saturday and Sunday amateurs ( zaterdagamateurs / zondagamateurs ). Traditionally Protestant teams play in the Saturday group and Catholic or proletarian teams play in the Sunday group. From the foundation in 1974 to the replacement as the highest amateur league by the top class, both departments played their winners nationwide in three seasons each and these then determined the Dutch amateur or high class champion. Since the 2010/11 season, the winners of each of the three regional relays have been promoted to the two groups of the top class. A championship is currently not played out at either section or class level.
