Paul Mendelssohn Bartholdy the Elder
Paul Felix Abraham Mendelssohn Bartholdy (born January 18, 1841 in Leipzig , † February 17, 1880 in Berlin ) was a German chemist and industrialist . Together with Carl Alexander Martius he founded the corporation for aniline production ( Agfa ).
Life
Paul Mendelssohn Bartholdy was a son of the composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and his wife Cécile and a brother of the historian Carl Mendelssohn Bartholdy . After the early death of his parents, he grew up in the house of his uncle, the banker Paul Mendelssohn-Bartholdy , in Berlin, Französische Strasse 35. He was supposed to take up a commercial profession, but decided to study chemistry at Heidelberg University . Like his brother Carl, he became a member of the Allemannia Heidelberg fraternity . In 1863 he completed his doctorate. From 1865 he worked as an assistant in August Wilhelm von Hofmann's laboratory at the University of Berlin . There he met Carl Alexander Martius , with whom he founded an aniline production company in the Berlin suburb of Rummelsburg in 1867 , the Gesellschaft für Anilinfabrikation mbH. After the Jordansche Farbenfabrik in Treptow was acquired in 1872, the production range was expanded to include the dyes fuchsine , aniline blue and methyl violet . In 1873 the two companies were merged to form an aniline manufacturing company ( Agfa ). In 1877 the Agfa company also acquired the process for the production of malachite green . By acquiring a license, she also gained access to the field of azo dyes . The production of azo dyes shaped the further development of the company.
During Paul Mendelssohn Bartholdy's lifetime, Agfa’s production focused on the manufacture of aniline and aniline dyes. The expansion of the field of activity to the field of photography only took place after his death under the management of Carl Alexander (von) Martius and Franz Oppenheim .
Paul Mendelssohn Bartholdy married Else Oppenheim (1844–1868), four years younger than him, in 1867, with whom he was related, since her mother Margarethe Oppenheim (1823–1890) was born Mendelssohn. On August 20, 1868, shortly after the birth of their first child Otto (1868–1949), Else Oppenheim died of typhus. The son, later a banker, was ennobled in 1906. Five years after the death of his first wife, Paul Mendelssohn Bartholdy married her younger sister Enole Oppenheim (1855–1939) in 1873, with whom he had four more children. He only survived the birth of his youngest child Paul Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1879–1956) for a short time.
Paul Mendelssohn Bartholdy the Elder died, one month after his 39th birthday, on February 17, 1880 in Berlin. He was buried in cemetery III of the congregation Jerusalems- und Neue Kirche in front of the Hallesches Tor . He rests there in the Mendelssohn-Oppenheim family grave at the side of his two wives. In the grave complex, a small, lying stele made of black granite serves as a grave marker.
Paul Mendelssohn Bartholdy the Younger, like his father, received his doctorate in chemistry and took on a director's position at Agfa.
