He was a son of the banker Abraham Mendelssohn Bartholdy and his wife Lea Mendelssohn Bartholdy , nee. Solomon. His siblings were the composer Fanny Hensel , the composer Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Rebecka Dirichlet . To distinguish it from the family branch of his brother Felix, Paul and his descendants have had a hyphen between the two components of the surname since around 1871.

From 1831 to 1833 Paul Mendelssohn-Bartholdy completed commercial training in London and Paris. He then joined the family bank Mendelssohn & Co. , of which he became a partner in 1838.

On May 31, 1835, he married Albertine Heine (1814–1879), a daughter of the Berlin banker Heinrich Carl Heine and sister of the mathematician Eduard Heine . With this he had the children Pauline (1844–1863), Katharine (1846–1906), Ernst (1846–1909), Gotthold (1848–1903) and Fanny (1851–1924). The nephews Carl and Paul Mendelssohn Bartholdy and the niece Flora Dirichlet also grew up with their uncle after the death of their parents.

In 1871 Paul Mendelssohn-Bartholdy became senior boss of the bank, where he was particularly responsible for international contacts, including to Russia, as well as the Hamburg branch, the Paul Mendelssohn-Bartholdy company, founded in 1837. The Prussian government valued him as a financial adviser, especially in the years 1865 to 1871.

Paul Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, who like his siblings was extraordinarily musically gifted and played the cello well, preserved a large part of the compositional legacy of his brother Felix and was co-editor of a two-volume edition of his letters.

His grave is on the Trinity Cemetery I in Berlin-Kreuzberg .

Paul Mendelssohn-Bartholdy published two volumes of letters from his brother Felix, who died early, in 1861 and 1862.
