Petronilla

Petronilla (Latin for "the little one of the Petronians"; in the LCI Petrolina of Rome ) was an early Christian virgin and martyr . Saint Petronilla suffered martyrdom in the second or third century. Historically secured findings about them have not been passed down. The legend (including the Acts of Peter ) made her the daughter of the Apostle Peter . Her grave in the Domitilla catacombs next to the grave of Nereus and Achilles was venerated as early as the 4th century. Pope Paul I transferred the sarcophagus with the relics of St. Petronilla in the 8th century in the mausoleum at St. Peter's Basilica . The feast day of the saints is May 31st .

iconography

In the iconography Petronilla is depicted as a prayer in Roman garb with the attributes of a martyr's crown and a martyr's palm and a dolphin, and as the apostle Peter's housekeeper with a key and a broom. Saint Petronilla is the patron saint of the city of Rome , the travelers and is invoked against fever. The earliest representation of the saints in the Domitilla catacombs is believed to be from the year 357. Petronilla the late Veneranda in the sky. In Palermo , St. Petronilla depicted on a 12th century mosaic with a veil, cross and gesture of blessing.
