Kishore Kumar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kishore Kumar ( Bengali : কিশোর কুমার; born August 4, 1929 in Khandwa , Madhya Pradesh ; † October 13, 1987 in Mumbai , Maharashtra ) was an Indian playback singer (in Hindi , Bengali , Marathi , Asamiya , Gujarati , Kannada ) and Actor. He worked for the Bollywood film. He also gained recognition as a poet, composer, producer, director, screenwriter and copywriter.

childhood

His father Kunjalal Ganguly was a lawyer and came from a Bengali family that belonged to the middle class. His mother Gouri Devi, on the other hand, came from a wealthy background. Kumar was the youngest of four children. Ashok Kumar was the eldest son, followed by Sati Devi, the only daughter in the family. It was followed by Anoop Kumar and Kishore, who was five years his junior.

When Kumar was a child, his older brother Ashok Kumar became a star in Bollywood, which had a huge impact on the youngest Kumar. He also became a big fan of the Indian actor and singer Kundan Lal Saigal and imitated his singing. Furthermore, his parents often persuaded him to imitate the song of his brother Ashok Kumar Main ban ka panchhi ban ban ke . Like his brother Ashok, Anoop Kumar ventured into Bollywood to emulate its successes.

Beginnings in Bollywood

Kishore Kumar followed in his older brother's footsteps and went to Mumbai to pursue a film career as a singer. At this point, Anoops' career was stuck as his singing wasn't as strong as his acting (at that time, actors who could sing and act were in great demand). On a visit to Austria , Anoop bought recordings to improve his singing. At a later date, back in India, Anoop is said to have entered his home when he heard a yodel from a room. He is said to have asked annoyed: "Who touched my recordings?" When he entered the room, he found that it was indeed the voice of the youngest kumar. Kishore had learned to yodel from Anoop's Austrian recordings.

Kishore Kumar did not like acting and wanted to become a recognized singer in Bollywood. But he had no conventional singing or music training. With the help of contacts made by his brother Ashok in the industry, he made his film debut - initially without leaving an impression. But Kishore Kumar continued acting, which at least allowed him to sing for soundtracks . At this point in his career, his style was derived from KL Saigal . One day Sachin Dev Burman came to Ashok Kumar's house and heard what sounded like the voice of KL Saigal in the bathroom. Impressed, SD Burman Ashok asked who was singing. When he heard the answer, he waited for Kishore Kumar to finish his bath. He spoke briefly to Kishore Kumar and appreciated his singing, but also advised him: “Do not try to ape KL Saigal. Copycats never become great artists. You should develop your own singing style. ”Then K. Kumar developed his own distinctive singing style, which was completely different from the styles Rafi , Mukesh and Saigal. He yodelled in many of his songs. SD Burman became his mentor and leader, and since he had never heard a yodel before, he used to call it "gala tod ke gaana" ('breakneck singing'). Yodelling became Kishore's trademark, and the media described his singing style as "yodelling to the moon".

Kishore becomes a familiar face

Kishore never wanted to act, but he was too scared to rebel against his older brother Ashok, who was determined to make him a famous Bollywood hero. After his early films failed, Kishore decided that he would act so badly in the upcoming film that no producer would ever offer him a role in any film again. The result of this decision was a strangely funny way of playing kishores. But instead of rejecting him, the movie buffs were delighted to see a hero who made them laugh. His style was a welcome change from the sober, romantic-tragic, traditional hero of Bollywood. Because of this, Kishore became the first choice of comedy film producers.

When SD Burman had him sing for Dev Anand in the films Taxi Driver and Paying Guest , SD Burman established Kishore as the voice of popular Dev Anand. After SD Burman and Lata Mangeshkar separated in 1957, he turned the patronage over to Asha Bhosle . Apart from SD Burman, there was another composer, Khemchand Prakash , who recognized Kishore's singing talent early on. He composed Kishore's songs in the film Ziddi , which established Kishore as a singer (even before working with SD Burman). Soon many other composers, like Ravi , realized that Kishore had the potential to be a good singer. Many lyric poets, including Majrooh Sultanpuri and Shailendra , became ardent admirers of Kishore.

SD Burman and Majrooh were working on duets at the time, which were not particularly popular in Bollywood until then. SD Burman once told Majrooh Sultanpuri, "We put so much energy into recording duets and nobody likes them." Majrooh replied, "That's our mistake. We lyricists never write good songs that couples would like to sing along with. ”After all, their duets were among the most popular duets of the late 1950s. Asha and Kishore sang the duets alongside their actual film work and thus became famous 'on the side', for example with the songs Chhod do aanchal , Zamaana kya kahega , Aye nigah-e-mastana , Aankhon mein kya ji , Arre yaar meri , Tum bhi ho gajab , Chhedo na meri zulfein . Majrooh, Asha and Kishore also recorded well-known duets with the composer Ravi in the film Dilli Ka Thug (1958) - C… A… T… Cat maane billi , Hum to mohabbat karega . By the way, it was Khemchand's Studio where Kishore and Lata Mangeshkar - with whom he sang many duets - met. One day Lata went to Khemchand's studio at the same time as Kishore . She thought at first that a bum was following her. It wasn't until she got to the studio that she realized that the 'bum' Kishore was Ashok Kumar's younger brother.

SD Burman, Majrooh, Asha and Kishore have worked together in many films, including Kishore's in-house production Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi (1958), in which Kishore Kumar, Madhubala , Ashok Kumar and Anoop Kumar appeared. The songs “Ek ladki bheegi bhaagi si”, “Haal kaisa hai janaab ka”, “Paanch rupaiya baara aana” became very popular. She could also be heard in Dev Anands Paying Guest (1957) and Teen Deviyan . The song Mana janab ne pukara nahin in Paying Guest was a complete success with the young people.

When it came to writing, Majrooh Sultanpuri and Shailendra were Kishore's favorites. He got her to write songs for his own productions. At that time, musicians suggested the writers to the producers. The music duo Shankar-Jaikishan had promised to recommend Sheilandra to all producers, but they did not keep their promise. Shailendra sent them a message: Chhoti si yeh duniya, pehchaane raaste hain; Kahin to miloge, phir poochhenge haal (The world is small, the streets are known; if we should meet somewhere, then I would ask you - “How are you”). Shankar-Jaikishan realized their mistake. They wrote a song from the mentioned words and got Kishore to sing it.

In the beginning Majrooh wrote most of the hits for Kishore, mostly with SD Burman for Dev Anand, among others Hum hain raahi pyaar ke , Maana janaab ne pukaara nahin .

Kishore was also interested in composing. It is said that he introduced electronic music to Bollywood with Kalyanji Shah (from the famous Kalyanji-Anandji ). Kishore also contributed some of the electronic sounds to SD Burman's music (he assisted SD Burman at times). From time to time he composed music or wrote lyrics himself. In 1961 he wrote, composed and sang in the film Jhumroo Main hoon jhumroo . This song is a good example of his ability to yodel. Kishore could also sing with a female voice. In Half Ticket (1962), he sang Aake Seedhi Lagi in both a male and a female voice. The song was written by Shailendra and composed by Salil Choudhury .

The lean years in Kishore Kumar's career

There were a few lean years in Kishore's career during the 1960s. Much of the films he has acted in flopped. Very few of his songs at this stage are memorable. Zaroorat hai, Zaroorat haiZaroorat hai, Zaroorat hai (from the film Manmauji 1962), written by Rajinder Krishan and composed by Madan Mohan is the only exception. Mohammed Rafi and Mukesh were the favorites of most musical composers, so Kishore never got to sing very good songs. Only a few of his songs, filmed by Dev Anand and composed by SD Burman, earned him recognition, such as Gaata rahe mera dil (from the film Guide 1965, a duet with Lata), Yeh dil na hota bechara (from Jewel Thief 1967) etc.

In 1966, SD Burman's son Rahul Dev Burman suddenly appeared on the music scene with a super hit in the film Teesri Manzil . He got Rafi to sing all of the songs in the film. Later, however, RD Burman (also known by his nickname Pancham ) gave a significant part of his patronage to Kishore Kumar.

The first joint hit film was the amusing film Padosan (1968). In this film, Kishore Kumar played the role of Sunil Dutt's Guru. Sunil Dutt was a boy who fell in love with a girl next door, a girl who was obsessed with singing. In order to impress the girl, he gets his guru to sing playback for him.

Kishore Kumar sang 'Playback' in the film and behind the camera. Kishore and Pancham produced the songs in the film. In one scene there was a verbal argument between Mehmood (who played the girl's guru) and Sunil Dutt aka Kishore Kumar. Kishore claimed that just speaking the dialogue would be boring. Mehmood was of the same opinion. So Kishore, Mehmood, poet Rajinder Krishan and Pancham sat together and thought up a 'musical argument' - Ek chaturnar, karke singaar . The song, sung by Kishore and Manna Dey (who sang for Mehmood) became very popular. Manna Dey, who was a classically trained singer, found it ridiculous that he should lose in the musical argument against a voice without training like the Kishore Kumars and initially refused to be part of the song. Mehmood (also a film producer) had to assure him personally that Manna Dey was a better singer and that it was the script content that made him lose the argument.

The superstar

In 1969 , Shakti Samanta produced the film Aradhana . The composer was SD Burman. At that time only one song (Kora kagaz tha yeh man mera) was recorded due to an illness of SD Burman . However, SD Burman had already composed the melodies for other songs. RD Burman (his son) took responsibility for completing the recordings. The hard work paid off when Kishore received his first Filmfare Award for the song "Roop Tera Mastena".

In 1970 Dev Anand's directorial debut Prem Pajari flopped , in which SD Burman and Kishore had recorded the music. But the songs - "Phoolon Ke Rang Se", "Lena Hoga Janam Hamein" and "Shokhiyon Mein Ghola Jaaye" became hits.

For the film Sharmilee , Kishore and SD Burman recorded the duet "Aaj Madhosh Hua Jaaye" with Lata, others were "Khilte Hain Gul Yahan" and the top hit "O Meri Sharmilee". SD Burman recorded the song "Pyaar Ke Is Khel Mein" with Kishore in 1973 for the film Jugnu .

Laxmikant-Pyarelal also composed many melodies for Kishore Kumar, which became big hits like "Mere Dil Mein Aaj Kya Hai" from the film Daag and "Mere Naseeb Mein Aye Dost" from the film Do Raaste , "Naach Meri Bulbul" from the film Roti , "Chal Chal Mere Haathi" from the film Haathi Mere Saathi and and "My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves" for the film Amar Akbar Anthony .

Laxmikant-Pyarelal brought Kishore and Rafi together for duets for the film Dostana and Ram Balram . The joint work with Laxmikant-Pyarelal continued with the songs "Achchha To Hum Chalte Hain", "Kal Ki Haseen Mulaqat Ke Liye", "Gore Rang Pe Na Itna", "Tu Kitne Baras Ki", "Gaari Bula Rahi Hai" , "Ruk Jaana Nahi" (film Imtihaan ) and "Mere Mehboob Qayamat Hogi" (film Mr X In Bombay ).

Kalyanji-Anandji and Kishore also recorded songs for the films Dharmatma , Laawaris , Muqaddar Ka Sikandar , Kabeela , Johny Mera Naam and Don . The songs "O Saathi Re" from the film Muqaddar Ka Sikandar , "Mera Jeevan Kora Kagaz" from the film Kora Kagaz and "Khaike Paan Banariswala" ( Don film ) were also hits.

In 1975 while Kishore Badi Sooni was recording Sooni Si Hai Zindagi (Life is lonely) for the film Mili , SD Burman fell into a coma. After his father died, RD Burman began spending more time with Kishore Kumar. He asked Kishore to sing the songs "Amitabh" and "Dharmrinder" for the film Sholay .

In the 1970s Kishore sang in less successful Dev Anands films directed by RD Burman such as Warrent (1975), Heera Panna , Shareef Badmash, etc. Although these films only generated average revenues, the music was a success. Songs like "Ruk Jaana O Jaana" (from Warrant ) and "Panna ki tamanna" (from Heera Panna ) and "Neend Chura Ke Raaton Mein" (from the movie Shareef Badmash ) became chart toppers .

Songs like "Agar Tum Na Hote", "Humein Tum Se Pyaar Kitna", "Mere Naina Saawan Bahado", "Chingari Koi Bhadke" or "O Maajhi Re" became hits. At that time, Kishore also sang for younger heroes. He also sang for Rishi Kapoor and Sanjay Dutt . Kishore and Lata sang some modern tunes for Sanjay's first film, Rocky , including "Kya Yehi Pyaar Hai" and "Hum Tumse Mile".

New musicians like Rajesh Roshan , Sapan Chakravarthy (Pancham's assistant), Bappi Lahiri and others preferred Kishore to other singers. Rajesh Roshan's first hit film, Julie, includes some memorable pieces sung by Kishore and Lata such as "Bhool gaya sab kuchh, Dil kya kare jab kisi se" etc. Rajesh Roshan worked with Kishore in many films such as Do Aur Do Paanch (1980), Doosra Aadmi ("Kya mausam hai"), Man Pasand ("Main akela aapni dhun me magan zindagi ke maza liye jaa raha tha"), Kaala Patthar , Swami , Swayamvar and Kaash . Bappi Lahiri, known for modernizing western melodies, asked Kishore to sing hits like "Chalte chalte", "Aaj rapat jaayein" (duet with Asha), "Pag ghunghroo" ( Namak Halaal - 1982 ). In 1984 songs like "Jahan chaar yaar" ( Sharaabi - 1984 ) and "Manzilen Apni Jagah Hai" ( Sharaabi - 1984) were created for which Kishore again won a Filmfare Award.

Kishore Kumar sang for Amitabh Bachchan , Jeetendra , Anil Kapoor and Govinda . Because of his eclectic voice and musical success, Amitabh Bachchan wanted Kishore Kumar to be his playback singer, just as Rajesh Khanna and Dev Anand had included him before.

During the Indian State of Emergency 1975-77, Kishore refused to sing "Emergency Propaganda" for Indira Gandhi . As a result, his songs were banned from all national media. Even so, Kishore became a legend.

The last few years

Kishore's son Amit Kumar was a well-known singer as early as the 1980s thanks to the patronage of RD Burman and Rajesh Roshan . But Kishore was still there, singing for both established and young heroes. Kishore and Amibath had a misunderstanding in the 1980s. Kishore was producing a film and Amitabh (who was a Bollywood deity at the time) was to make a guest appearance in the film. Amitabh reached the location but left after a few minutes and asked his secretary, Kishore, to explain that he would not be in the film. Kishore got angry and decided never to sing for Amitabh again. By the way, Amitabh's films started to flop after this incident and he saw himself in the worst phase of his Bollywood career. Many years later he made a comeback with the widespread television series Kaun Banega Crorepati (the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? ) .

Kishore sang for Anil Kapoor in his first film 'Woh Saat Din'. He also sang in Anil's first big hit movie 'Mr. India 'for him. LP wrote the music for both films. In 1987 he sang some really nice songs for RD Burman in the movie 'Saagar' - Saagar jaisi aankhon waali (based on the Raga Yaman technique) and Saagar kinaare dil yeh pukaare (duet with Lata). The songs were written by Javed Akhtar .

In 1987, Kishore decides to withdraw from the Bollywood business and return to his roots, his village of Khandwa. He dies in October 1987. His last wish to go to Kandhwa was granted by taking his body to his birthplace for post-embalming cremation.

Kishore Kumar inspired more playback singers than anyone else. Many of today's leading Indian playback singers, including Kumar Sanu , Abhijeet and Babul Supriyo began their careers as 'imitators' of Kishore Kumar. They all copied Kishore's unique voice (to some extent they still do, though they have developed their own style over time). When Kishore was at the height of his career, the only way to get a foothold in Bollywood was by copying him and singing in low budget films where producers couldn't afford to hire Kishore themselves.

Kishore's personal life

Kishore Kumar married four times: Ruma Guha Thakurta (1950–1958), Madhubala (1960–1969), Yogeeta Bali (1975–1978) and Leena Chandavarkar (1980–1987).

His son Amit Kumar also became a singer, mostly in the same genre, if not as successful as his father. Kishore's second son Sumit Kumar is also a playback artist.

Kishore Kumar married Ruma Ghosh in May 1951 in Bombay and his son Amit Kumar was born the following year. The couple separated in 1958. Ruma Ghosh married Arup Guhathakurta and had two children by him. She is also a singer, actress and a prominent figure in the performing arts industry. She comes from the respected Bengali Brahmin family. Her father was Satyen Ghosh (known as Montey Ghosh), her mother Sati Devi, a talented singer. Sati Devi's younger sister Bijoya is married to the legendary film director Satyajit Ray . Ruma enjoyed her formal upbringing in many places, e.g. B. for a short time in Shantiniketan . As a child she was also a student at the cultural Uday Shankar training center in Almora , where her mother worked as a music teacher. Sati Devi accompanied Uday Shankar to Europe in the 1940s.
