Almora ( Hindi : अल्मोड़ा , Almoṛā ) is a city in the southeastern part of the Indian state of Uttarakhand .
It is the administrative seat of the district of the same name . The city is located in the Front Himalayas at 1633 m above sea level . The river Kosi runs west past Almora.
In the 2011 census, the population was 34,122. The city has the status of a Nagar Palika Parishad .
Almora was founded in 1560 by the Chand dynasty. Almora is an important market town in the Kumaon region and a major transportation hub.
