Almora is a Turkish symphonic metal band that was founded in 2001 in Istanbul .

history

Almora was created in 2001 from a music project by the Turkish musician Soner Canözer. In the following year, the band released the EP Standing Still & Cyrano and then their debut album Gates of Time , which, like all other albums, was released on the Turkish label Zihni Müzik. With their second album Kalihora's Song , the band released an album outside of Turkey for the first time, which increased their popularity.

In October 2004 the album Shehrâzad was finally released , which received international attention and was named by the Turkish daily Milliyet and Blue Jean Magazine as one of the five best Turkish rock albums of all time. The band was particularly popular in Japan, which was not least reflected in the fact that two songs on the album were included in the musical Jazzy Fairies / Revue of Dreams by the popular Japanese music theater group Takarazuka Revue .

In 2006, in collaboration with the well-known Turkish opera tenor Hakan Aysev, the album 1945 was conceived as a rock opera . In 2008 the band released the album Kiyamet Senfonisi on which the Turkish rock musician Ogün Sanlısoy has a guest appearance. It differs from the previous works by its much more symphonic music and more harmonious vocals.

style

In their music Almora combine hard rock and heavy metal with Turkish folklore music as well as with elements of classical music . The instrumentation is correspondingly diverse, including cellos , violins , flutes and a piano . The male and female singing alternating from song to song is characteristic. In particular, the high pitches of the soprano singers, flutes and violins stand in contrast to the otherwise hard rock and metal sounds, which promotes a cheerful mood of the music.

Initially, the lyrics were mostly written in English, as the band felt it was more appropriate for their music. The newer albums also increasingly feature Turkish lyrics. They often refer to old oriental folk tales and fairy tales. The album Shehrâzad is based on the main character of the same name ( Scheherazade ) from the ancient Persian fairy tales of the Arabian Nights .
