CamStudio is free software for recording screencasts as video.
Summary
The software can record both the entire screen and just a section of it. CamStudio supports several codec processes (including Cinepak from Radius) for the AVI video container format and the subsequent export to a Flash film in SWF format. The program has a voice recording functionality.
The program is distributed as free software also in source code under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) and is administered on the SourceForge website .
history
CamStudio was originally published by the American developer RenderSoft. RenderSoft was bought by eHelp and the project was integrated into the RoboDemo software . In version 2.1 published by eHelp, the functionality of CamStudio was limited and registration was necessary in order to limit free competition to commercial products.
After the acquisition of eHelp by Macromedia (the developer of the Flash studio), RoboDemo was renamed Captivate . Captivate was only sold under a proprietary license and is now part of Adobe Inc. after the purchase of Macromedia .
Based on the last unrestricted open source version 2.0, the development of CamStudio was continued and in September 2007 it was released again as free software with the release of the beta version CamStudio 2.5 Beta 1. It has been renamed to CamStudio Open Source accordingly .
Malware
Trojan.Gen.2 malware was found with additional programs that can be installed during installation. The software is financed by these additionally installed programs. It is still not recommended to install it, as fraudulent programs can cause a lot of damage.
CamStudio v2.7.2 can currently only be installed with the malicious software. If this is rejected during the installation, the installation will be stopped.
