Sanjay Dutt ( Hindi : संजय दत्त; born July 29, 1959 in Mumbai , India ) is one of the most famous actors in Indian cinema and a top star in Bollywood . He is the son of Bollywood actors Nargis and Sunil Dutt .

Career

Sanjay Dutt made his acting debut in 1971 in the film Reshma Aur Shera , which his father directed. Under his direction, Rocky was also created in 1981 , in which Sanjay Dutt played a leading role for the first time. The film was a flop, however. With films like Naam , Kabzaa , Hathyar , Sadak and Saajan , Sanjay Dutt developed a steady screen presence in the 80s, and he finally celebrated his breakthrough in Subhash Ghai's feature film Khalnayak in 1993. However, the success was overshadowed by the arrest of Sanjay Dutt at the same time Year.

Private life

As a young man in the 1980s, Sanjay Dutt was treated several times for drug addiction in the United States. After a particularly severe relapse into drug addiction, his lungs failed and after an initial operation in India, he was sent back to the United States, where he was completely cured by medical specialists. In the private clinic where he was treated, he met the Indian Bollywood actress Richa Sharma, whom he married shortly after his discharge from the hospital. Shortly after the birth of her daughter Trishala, Richa Sharma died of a brain tumor. Since Sanjay Dutt wanted to raise his daughter in India, there was a custody suit with his parents-in-law in a US court, which he lost. His daughter now lives with his in-laws in New York.

Conflict with the law

Since the early 1940s, the increasingly developing Indian film industry, in particular the Bombays (later Mumbai ), has been used as a money laundering facility for organized crime (see also Hindi film and Bollywood ). Connections between these groups originally came about due to a lack of materials during the time of the Second World War. Since the British authorities in India (at that time still a colony) declared all material necessary for film production as essential war goods, filmmakers began to buy sanctioned equipment on the black market. To this day, connections between criminals and filmmakers have survived in India.

In April 1993, Sanjay Dutt was arrested. Prosecutors suspected that he was involved (along with others in the film industry) in the 1993 Bombay bombings ("Black Friday"), in which over 250 people were killed and over 700 injured. These were related to the unrest that broke out around the turn of 1992/93 in Bombay 1992 ("Bombay Riots"), which also claimed a high number of victims. As a result, Dutt and others were arrested and investigated.

The prosecution accused the Bollywood star of possessing a machine gun and pistol that had been smuggled into Bombay for a series of attacks. In fact, Dutt owned illegally acquired weapons; he had secretly learned to shoot in Mauritius . People he knew were implicated in the 1993 events. He was released on bail in October 1995, but was detained in December. In April 1997, the actor was released again on bail.

Condemnation

Nine years later, the case went to court in 2006, and by July 2007, Sanjay Dutt spent seven months in prison. He was eventually sentenced to six years in prison for illegal possession of firearms, and any further involvement in the attacks was ruled out. The actor had served 18 months of the sentence by then. In November 2007, Dutt was released on bail and allowed to go back to work. A political engagement for the Samajwadi Party in the parliamentary elections in India in 2009 and in the following year failed, not least because of his conviction as a criminal.

In March 2013, the judgment was confirmed at the next instance, but set for five years. A suspension on probation was ruled out despite petitions from supporters and Dutt was asked to surrender. He complied with this in May, but serving the rest was postponed until March 2014 by means of parole in December. In December 2015, Sanjay Dutt was given two weeks' leave and at the end of February 2016 he was released from prison after serving his sentence. Ultimately, his contacts with the criminal underworld could not be fully clarified.
