action
Calcutta 1962: Lalita comes as an orphan to the family of her uncle Gurucharan. She quickly became friends with his daughter Koel and with Shekhar. Shekhar Rai is the boy next door and the son of Navin Rai, a businessman. Shekhar shares a deep friendship and shared passion for music with Shekhar, who composes his piano pieces with her help.
One day Gurucharan has a heart attack and has to borrow a large sum of money from his neighbor Navin Rai. Three years later, Navin demands his money back and threatens to take his house as a replacement. He intends to turn it into a hotel. He doesn't tell his son Shekhar about his plan.
Lalita meets Girish, her friend's uncle and neighbor Charu. Girish is from London and immediately falls in love with Lalita. When Shekhar notices that he is wooing her, he realizes that he has always loved her. But his father wants the beautiful Gayatri Tantia as his daughter-in-law, who comes from a wealthy family.
Shekhar becomes jealous when he sees another man at Lalita's side. His jealousy leads Shekhar to treat Lalita roughly. He casts her out of anger because he believes that Lalita will marry Girish. Girish learns of Guruchan's and Navin's contract. He realizes that Navin knew that Guruchan could never pay off the money in time. He makes Guruchan his partner and gives him an advance of 180,000 rupees to pay off his debts. Navin gets angry when he realizes he won't get the house. He never wants to see Guruchan and his family again. While Shekhar is away on business, his father builds a wall between his house and Gurucharan's house. At the sight of the wall, Guruchan had another heart attack and died shortly afterwards. Navin wants Shekhar to stop seeing Lalita. For Navin, it is child's play to convince the angry and jealous Shekhar that Guruchan Lalita wants to marry Girish because Girish has helped the family in financial difficulties. After Guruchan's death, Girish decides that he will take the rest of the family with him to London. The family is packing their things and wants to leave. Across the street, in the neighboring house, the groom Shekhar is getting ready for his wedding. Girish comes into his room and hands him the papers for the house. He reveals to Shekhar his love for Lalita and that his love will go unrequited. Lalita claimed that she was already married. Shekhar understands that Lalita was referring to him. Koel will become Girish's wife, not Lalita. Navin comes in after Girish leaves. Navin sees the house's papers and is overjoyed. Shekhar is upset because his father cares more about business than his relationships with people. He realizes that he acted coldly, as did his father. He storms out into the garden in front of the wall and tries to break it. The wedding guests watch him and cheer him on, as Shekhar turns against his father. On the other side of the wall, Lalita watches him, caught by the noise. When Shekhar finally manages to destroy the wall, he goes through and leads Lalita to the other side. He describes her as his wife in front of the guests and marries her.
