Majrooh Sultanpuri (actually Asrar Hasan Khan ; Hindi : मजरुह सुलतानपुरी , Majruh Sultānpurī , also मजरूह सुलतानपुरी , Majrūh Sultānpurī ; * October 1, 1919 in Sultanpur , Uttar Pradesh ; † May 24, 2000 in Mumbai , Maharashtra ) was an Indian Urdu poet . He was best known for his lyrics for more than 300 Hindi films .

Life

Majrooh Sultanpuri is the son of a police officer and grew up in Lucknow , where he learned Urdu and Arabic. He studied Persian in Aligarh . Then he moved to Bombay . His first poems are written in Ghazal form and influenced by the style of Jigar Muradabadi ; Members of the Progressive Writers' Association criticized this form for its "feudal decadence". Sultanpuri did not share this view, but modernized the poetic form of the Ghazal. His attitude, not simply to cut off tradition, but to develop it further, was a. also represented by Faiz Ahmed Faiz .

In order to take advantage of the wide spread of the medium and not least to earn money, many poets of the time worked for the Indian film industry from time to time. Majrooh Sultanpuri wrote his first lyrics for AR Kadars Shahjehan (1946), which also contained Kundan Lal Saigal's famous song Jab dil hi toot gaya . In the 1950s Majrooh Sultanpuri was one of the most important songwriters of Hindi / Urdu film in India with Sahir Ludhianvi , Shakeel Badayuni and Shailendra . He wrote songs for Shammi Kapoor , worked for the Filmistan company and for some films by Dev Anand and Guru Dutt , as well as regularly in productions by Nasir Hussain . He frequently worked with composers Naushad , Madan Mohan , Roshan , Omkar Prasad Nayyar , Laxmikant-Pyarelal , Sachin Dev Burman and Rahul Dev Burman .

In his 50-year career, which lasted until the late 1990s, he wrote the lyrics for numerous hits such as Uthaye ja unke sitam (from Andaz ), Chhod do aanchal zamana kya kahega (from Paying Guest ), Jalte Hain Jiske Liye (from Sujata ) , Na Tum Hume Jaano (from Baat Ek Raat Ki ), Aye dil mujhe aisee jagah le cha (from Aarzoo ), Diwana mujhsa nahin (from Teesri Manzil ), Chura liya hai tumne jo dil ko (from Yaadon Ki Baraat ) and Papa kehte hai bada naam karega (from Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak ).

Majrooh Sultanpuri was the first songwriter to receive a Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1994.
