Kaala Patthar ( Hindi : काला पत्थर; translated: Black Stone ) is a Hindi film by Yash Chopra from 1979. It is based on the mining disaster in Dhanbad on December 27, 1975.

Former naval officer Vijay was convicted by a court-martial and dishonorably dismissed - punishment for his cowardice as the captain of a sinking ship that killed 300 men.

Now Vijay works in a mine and uses every opportunity to prove his courage in order to suppress his past. The criminal Mangal, who is hiding from the police there, and the engineer Ravi also work in the mine. You become friends with Vijay.

Vijay falls in love with the doctor Dr. Sudha Sen, Mangal flirts with the bracelet seller Channo and saves her from rapists and Ravi meets his old flame Anita, who wants to write a story about the mine as a journalist.

But soon Ravi has to worry about the lives of Vijay and the other workers. The boss of the Dhanraj Puri mine wants to use a tunnel that is just before a huge water depot. If the water falls, disaster threatens, but in Dhanraj, money is more important than the lives of men. So Vijay, Ravi and Mangal, another friend, are protesting for justice.

The feared water ingress occurs. Mangal sacrifices his life underground so that Ravi and Vijay can save several friends. Vijay can finally overcome his trauma from the past.
