action
India 1925: After the death of Gulshan Rai, his friend Nawab Badruddin raises his son Amrit. He supports him so that he soon becomes a respected doctor and Savitri has a happy marriage. Now Badruddin has an important concern and asks Amrit for help. Badruddin's daughter Husn Bano is pregnant by her teacher Javed. A wedding never took place because Badruddin did not consider Javed appropriate. Meanwhile he regrets his decision. Amrit and Savitri make a proposal. They want to raise the illegitimate child Dilip and thus save Husn Bano's honor.
The years go by and Husn marries Javed after all. The marriage went well, but after a miscarriage, Husn could no longer have children. Husn is frustrated and they leave home.
15 years later: Husn and Javed return to their house, but a lot has changed. There is political unrest between Hindus and Muslims . Dilip also takes part in the political process as a Hindu-nationalist fighter. Since Dilip grew up with his Hindu foster parents, he still does not know that his birth parents belonged to Islam.
After the partition of India , he incites his political supporters to burn down the house of Husn Bano and Javed. In doing so, he learns of his true origin. He's devastated. And now his followers think he is a deceiver and want to kill him. His fiancée Heema calls the police and saves him from death. For the first time Dilip realizes that love and humanity should be put in the foreground and not belonging to a religious community.

criticism
"" Dharmputra "may have staging deficits, the ending a bit messed up and the songs are hardly remembered for long - but it is a committed, confident work by a young filmmaker with obvious talent."
