Chandni ( Hindi : चाँदनी , cā̃ndanī ; translated: moonlight , popular female first name) is a 1989 Hindi film by Yash Chopra .

action

Rohit and Chandni are newly in love and want to tie the knot and oppose Rohit's parents, who are against this marriage. During a romantic trip in Switzerland , before the wedding ceremony, Rohit falls from a helicopter and is paralyzed on one side. Believing that he is ruining Chandni's life, he pretends not to love her anymore and abandons her.

Chandni finds solace in the businessman Lalit, who soon falls in love with her and proposes to her. After a long hesitation, she finally agrees.

While the two grew closer during this time, Rohit is undergoing a cure in Switzerland. He's making great strides so he'll be able to walk again soon. Often Rohit also thinks of his Chandni and finds them in his songs. Coincidentally, during his cure, he runs into a businessman with whom he gets along brilliantly straight away: It's Lalit.

Back in India , Rohit is on Chandni's doorstep. Both are so overwhelmed to see each other again that Rohit proposes again. With a heavy heart, Chandni reports that she now belongs to another man.

After Lalit and Rohit became good friends, he invited him to his wedding. One day before the wedding, Lalit wants to introduce his new boyfriend to his fiancée. For Lalit's sake, both behave like strangers. But on the wedding day, Lalit finally understands that Chandni is the woman Rohit sang about in Switzerland.

criticism

The film and its marketing campaign were tailored to the lead actress Sridevi , who was one of the leading Indian actresses at the time. It can be seen as an advertising platform for Sridevi as the ideal fantasy of Indian film consumers about femininity.

Others

  • Originally, Rekha was supposed to take on the role of Chandni, but she refused.
  • Chandni premiered on September 14, 1989 and was quite successful. Today it is one of the classics.
  • A melody from the film was used as a song in the later Yash Raj film Lamhe ( Kabhi Main Kahon ).
