Shiv Kumar Sharma (born January 13, 1938 in Jammu ) is an Indian santur virtuoso .

Under the guidance of his father Uma Datta Sharma, he first learned tabla , santur and singing. After his first major public appearance in 1955 with the santur, he concentrated on this instrument (although he continued to excel as a tabla player). He bears the title of recognized musician Pandit .

Shiv Kumar Sharma is credited with making the formerly Kashmiri folk musical instrument an accepted concert instrument for Indian classical music . Although it is not possible to slide back and forth between the tones due to its structure and is therefore somewhat unsuitable for playing ragas , Sharma succeeded in bringing the santoor into concert halls by changing the original instrument and new playing techniques.

He had his first international appearance in 1968 in the USA with Ravi Shankar . After that, concert tours took him repeatedly to Europe and America. Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma performed together with Ustad Zakir Hussain ; and they played CDs. Recordings were also made with Hariprasad Chaurasia and also with Vishwa Mohan Bhatt . He has performed with his son Rahul, who also plays santur, since the late 1990s . Sharma wrote music for a number of Hindi films.

He has received numerous awards including a Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1986), the Padma Shri (1991) and the Padma Vibhushan (2001).

Shiv Kumar Sharma's name has become synonymous with Indian santur music.
