General

In the industrial city with steel and textile industry, machine tools and sewing machines, mopeds, bicycles and agricultural equipment are manufactured. It is a country trading center with a grain market (Mandi) and is an important transshipment point for goods traffic. Seasonal workers from other Indian states usually arrive here first before continuing their journey. Irrigated agriculture is practiced in the area.

A serious problem caused by the industrial facilities, which for the most part do not meet certain environmental requirements despite government regulations, is the smog that hangs over the greater Ludhiana area and causes physical illnesses and ailments such as B. Causes breathlessness.

Ludhiana is the cultural center of the area with theaters, museums, cinemas and galleries as well as transport hubs in the region (road, railroad, airport). The Grand Trunk Road , connecting the cities of Amritsar and Delhi , runs through Ludhiana. The Christian Medical College was opened in 1895, and the Agricultural University in 1962.

In 1480 Ludhiana was founded by Princess Lodhi of Delhi . In 1845 an important battle in the First Sikh War took place in the city and its surroundings .

The Bilwanwali Masjid Mosque and the Alawal Khan Mausoleum are worth seeing.

The local soccer club JCT Mills Football Club plays in the Indian premier league .

climate

The climate crisis has led to a drastic shortage of drinking water in large parts of India . This is particularly noticeable in Ludhiana. The city is one of those 21 major Indian cities whose groundwater reserves will be completely depleted in 2020 according to calculations by the government agency NITI Aayog.
