Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar ( Panjabi ਸਾਹਿਬਜ਼ਾਦਾ ਅਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਗਰ , short SAS Nagar , Panjabi ਅਜੀਤਗੜ੍ਹ Ajītgaṛh ; formerly Mohali , Panjabi ਮੋਹਾਲੀ ) is a city ( municipal corporation ) in the Indian state of Punjab .

The city was named after the eldest son of Guru Gobind Singh , Sahibzada Ajit Singh . SAS Nagar borders the city of Chandigarh in the northeast . Together with this city and the city of Panchkula further to the east, SAS Nagar forms the Chandigarh Tricity agglomeration , in which 1.4 million people live. In the 2011 census, the population of SAS Nagar was 146,213, with suburbs it was 166,864.

SAS Nagar is located in the lowlands at an altitude of 324  m about 12 km from the Siwaliks . The city is the seat of the district of the same name .

The climate crisis has led to a drastic shortage of drinking water in large parts of India . This is particularly noticeable in the former Mohali. The city is one of those 21 major Indian cities whose groundwater reserves will be completely depleted in 2020 according to calculations by the government agency NITI Aayog.
