Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, also Mohali , is a district in the northern Indian state of Punjab .

The area is 1094 km². The administrative seat is the city of Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar .

history

The district was formed in 1995 from parts of the Rupnagar and Patiala districts . The district is named after Sahibzada Ajit Singh, the son of Gobind Singh .

The religiously divided district has experienced conflicts between Hindus and Sikhs in the past.

population

The population is 994,628 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 33.15%, which is very high. Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar has a gender ratio of 879 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The district has a literacy rate of 83.80% in 2011, an increase of almost 6 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus above the national average. Just under 48.2% of the population are Sikhs , 47.9% are Hindus , 3.0% are Muslims , 0.5% are Christians , and 0.1% are Jainas and 0.3% did not indicate any religious affiliation.

Almost 54.8% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar with 146,213 inhabitants.
