Firozpur is a district in the northern Indian state of Punjab . The state is named after Firuz Shah Tughlaq , who was Sultan of Delhi from 1351 to 1388.

The area is 5305 km². The administrative seat is the city of Firozpur .

history

In 2011, the Fazilka district was spun off from Firozpur, which reduced the number of inhabitants and the area.

population

The population is 2,029,074 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 16.21%. Firozpur has a gender ratio of 893 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The district has a literacy rate of 68.92% in 2011, an increase of almost 8 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus below the national average. Almost 53.8% of the population are Sikhs , 44.7% are Hindus , 1.0% are Christians , 0.3% are Muslims and 0.2% did not indicate any religious affiliation.

Almost 27.2% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Firozpur with 110,313 inhabitants.
