Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar is a district in the northern Indian state of Punjab .
The area is 3386 km². The administrative seat is the city of Nawanshahr .
history
The Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar district was formed in 1995 from parts of the Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar districts . The district was first called Nawanshahr until it was named after the Indian freedom fighter Bhagat Singh in 2008 .
population
The population is 612,310 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 4.23%. Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar has a gender ratio of 954 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is usual for India. The district has a literacy rate of 79.78% in 2011, an increase of almost 3 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus above the regional and national average.
