Barnala is a district in the northern Indian state of Punjab .
The area is 1482 km². The administrative seat is the city of Barnala .
history
The Barnala District was created in 2006 from parts of the Sangrur District .
population
The population is 595,527 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 13.02%. Barnala has a gender ratio of 876 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district has a literacy rate of 67.82% in 2011, an increase of almost 7 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus below the national average. Almost 78.5% of the population are Sikhs , 18.9% are Hindus , 2.2% are Muslims , 0.1% are Christians and 0.1% stated no religious affiliation.
Almost 32.0% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Barnala with 116,449 inhabitants.
