Gurdaspur is a district in the northern Indian state of Punjab .

The area is 3551 km². The administrative seat is the city of Gurdaspur .

history

During the partition of India in 1947, the future of Gurdaspur could not be decided for many days. The district had a Muslim majority of 51.14%. In the end, only the Shakargarh Tehsil of Gurdaspur district came to Pakistan , and the rest of the district was added to India. Most of the district's Muslims then emigrated to Pakistan.

In 2011, the Pathankot district was spun off from Gurdaspur, which reduced the number of inhabitants and the area.

The population is 2,298,323 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 9.26%. Gurdaspur has a gender ratio of 876 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district has a literacy rate of 79.95% in 2011, an increase of almost 6 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus above the national average. Almost 46.7% of the population are Hindus , 43.6% are Sikhs , 7.7% are Christians , 1.2% are Muslims and 0.7% stated no religious affiliation.

Almost 28.7% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Batala with 156,619 inhabitants.
