Patiala ( Panjabi ਪਟਿਆਲਾ ) is a city (since 1997 Municipal Corporation ) in the northwestern Indian state of Punjab with a population of about 405,000 (2011 census).

It was founded in 1763 and was the capital of the Princely State of Patiala until 1956 and of the Patiala and East Punjab States Union (PEPSU) from 1948–56 .
