Phagwara ( Panjabi ਫਗਵਾੜਾ ) is a city in the northwest Indian state of Punjab .
At the 2011 census, Phagwara had about 98,000 inhabitants. Phagwara is the smallest city by population in Punjab that has the status of a municipal corporation . It belongs to the Kapurthala district . Phagwara is located on the NH 1 national highway, 20 km east-southeast of Jalandhar and 35 km north of Ludhiana . The city is also on the main railway line between Delhi and Amritsar .
