Jan Reichow

Jan Reichow (born December 6, 1940 in Greifswald ) is a German violinist and music editor . His work focuses on early music and the musical cultures of Asia and Africa .

Live and act

Jan Reichow was born as the son of Kapellmeister and pianist Artur Reichow and his wife Gertrud, née. Arnhölter was born in Greifswald. After the family moved to the western part of Germany at the end of the Second World War , he grew up in Lohe near Bad Oeynhausen .

From 1960 to 1970 he studied violin , school music , German literature , musicology , philosophy and ethnology in Berlin and Cologne . In 1971 he did his doctorate at the University of Cologne on the subject of "The unfolding of a melody model in the Sikāh genus".

From 1965 on, Reichow played as a violinist in chamber music ensembles with a focus on historically oriented performance practice , such as the Collegium Musicum of West German Broadcasting Corporation WDR, Collegium Aureum , La Petite Bande and Musica Antiqua Cologne .

After previously working as a freelancer for WDR Cologne, he was a full-time music editor at WDR from 1976 until his retirement in 2005. As such, he made numerous recording trips to the Orient , Asia and Africa and organized concerts and festivals with non-European music. In addition to the WDR world music festivals, this also included regular broadcasts on world music. He was also the editor and author of the accompanying texts for CDs, such as the recordings of the Abegg Trio , the organ works by Max Reger with Christoph Bossert , on Indian music , Afghan music and Arabic music . The two main focuses of his numerous publications are in the area of ​​"early music" in Europe as well as traditional and current forms of world music . Since his retirement he has been working in the music sector for various German broadcasters and runs a blog on which his texts and broadcasts are also archived.

Reichow is a member of the jury for the Record Critics' Award for Category 20: Traditional Ethnic Music .
