Vyjayantimala (actually: Vyjayantimala Bali ; born August 13, 1936 in Madras , Tamil Nadu ) is an Indian actress. She is the first all-Indian star from South India, with her the need for an actress to also be a good dancer established itself.

Vyjayantimala made her film debut in 1949 in a Tamil film. The Bollywood remake of this film was also her first appearance in the Hindi film. She made her breakthrough as a dancer in Bimal Roys Devdas (1955) at the side of Dilip Kumar . For this she received the Filmfare Award / Best Supporting Actress .

She became famous in Bimal Roy's Madhumati (1958) and in the role of a prostitute in BR Chopras Sadhna (1958), for which she received her first Filmfare Award for best actress. Her role in the classic Ganga Jamuna (1961) by Nitin Bose is considered outstanding and she impresses with an almost perfect Bhojpuri dialect despite her South Indian origins. Her last major success was Raj Kapoor's Sangam (1964).

Vyjayantimala is a three-time winner of the Filmfare Award / Best Actress , in 1995 she received the Filmfare Award / Lifetime Achievement . After their marriage in 1968, she left the film business. She was elected twice for the Congress party in the Indian Parliament in the 1980s .
