action

British filmmaker Sue comes to India after reading her grandfather's diary. He served in the British Army when India was fighting for independence. She comes to India to make a documentary about some of the heroes of the Indian freedom movement - men like Bhagat Singh and Chandrashekhar Azad . With the help of her friend Sonia, she is looking for suitable actors for the roles. Sonia introduces Sue to some of her male friends: Daljeet aka "DJ", Sukhi, Karan and Aslam. Although they all study, they live a party life.

Sue convinces her to act in her film. Laxman Pandey, who is active in a party, joins them later. The other men initially dislike him because of his strict Hindu beliefs, his aversion to Aslam, who is Muslim, and not least because of the principles of his party.

As the young men learn their lines, they learn more about the history of the independence movement (including the Amritsar massacre ) and realize that, unlike the men who play them, they have lived mostly for themselves and their fun and India Have ignored problems. They lack the spirit of patriotic self-sacrifice.

Just as they begin to form some higher ideals, they face a tragedy in their midst. Sonia's fiancé Ajay is an Indian Air Force pilot. He crashes during an exercise and dies. The friends learn that Ajay steered the plane away from the town of Ambala in order to avoid many civilian deaths, instead of parachuting himself to rescue.

The government explains the crash as a human error and pilot negligence, but Sonia and her friends know that Ajay was a seasoned pilot and that many MiGs have crashed recently - too many to be a "human error" . They find out that the crash was the fault of the corrupt defense minister, who signed a contract for cheap, faulty spare parts.

The group decided to demonstrate peacefully against this practice, but the police broke their strike. Aslam and Ajay's mother are seriously injured during a street battle with police beating them. The young men decide to take action against injustice, just like their heroes, Bhagat Singh and Chandrasekhar Azad. Acts of violence follow.

The defense minister is shot dead by them, but the press portrays them as terrorists who acted on behalf of abroad. The defense minister is mourned by the press as a completely innocent victim.

The way their heroes showed them, they want to make the truth public. They decide to ask and blackmail their friend, who is watching a late night show on the radio, for a chance to broadcast their story and later answer questions over the phone. Your story comes to the people and this shows the will to change the circumstances.

As a result of the brutal police action, all of the boys are killed. Not only the protagonist DJ and his friends, but also Laxman Pandey, whose political views have changed as a result of the newly made friends. Only the two girls Sonia and Sue are left with their grief.

Controversy

  • The film is critical of the Indian government and addresses some political scandals. Indian films must be cleared by a censorship committee before they can be shown and producers feared the committee would not approve the film. They invited Defense Minister Pranab Mukherjee to a private screening of the film to avert a crisis. The film was released - it is not clear whether the Secretary of Defense had anything to do with it.
  • Some scenes had to be removed after animal rights activists and the Lok Sabha MP Maneka Gandhi protested. The scenes had been shot before production and had the approval of the Indian Animal Welfare Board of India . One of the movie posters shows one of the scenes (with Aamir Khan riding through a street).
