R. Madhavan ( Ranganathan Madhavan ; Tamil : ஆர். மாதவன், Mātavaṉ; born June 1, 1970 in Jamshedpur , Jharkhand ) is an Indian actor and television game show host of Tamil origin.

Prior to his film career, the son of Ranganathan, a former member of the army, and his wife Saroja starred in Hindi television series and commercials. His main role in Mani Ratnam's Tamil film Alaipayuthey (2000) gave him his breakthrough in feature films . Already in 2001 he rose to the top tier of actors in the Tamil film industry after Minnale by Gautham Menon . The Hindi remake of this film, Rehna Hai Tere Dil Mein with Diya Mirza and Saif Ali Khan , was a box-office flop.

For his role in Run (2002), he was named Best Actor at the Filmfare Awards South . After the popular success in Mani Ratnam's war-torn Sri Lanka playing Kannathil Muthamittal , Madhavan tried a second time to gain a foothold in the Bollywood film industry . The strip Dil Vil Pyar Vyar did not bring him a breakthrough again. His next Tamil films were also unsuccessful.

Only the successful director Mani Ratnam brought him back into focus with Aayitha Ezhuthu . With his negative role as a gangster, he won another Filmfare Award South for Best Supporting Actor . In the Hindi remake Yuva the roll was Abhishek Bachchan occupied. Meanwhile, Madhavan had also played in a Bollywood hit with his role in Rang De Basanti . In his most recent film, Rendu , he played a double role for the first time.

R. Madhavan hosted the game show Deal Ya No Deal for Doordarshan from late 2005 to January 2006 . After the simultaneous work in film and television became too much for him, Mandira Bedi took over the post for the second season of the game show from February 2006 . The third season from the end of 2006 was again presented by Madhavan.

With his wife Sarita he has a son and a daughter. Like many Tamils, Madhavan is a vegetarian and is involved in the PETA campaign in India . He also starred in the short film Herova Zerova alongside Surya, his wife Jothika and Vijay to educate people about child labor.
