In India , the box office hit broke all records and, as the second most successful film of the last decade (2000–2009), made it over the 2 billion rupee mark for the first time .

action

Farhan, Raju and Rancho share a room at the Imperial College of Engineering (ICE) in the Indian city of Delhi . Rancho, who shows a highly intelligent and bold charisma on the first day, but otherwise remains as good as wordless, soon turns out to be a warm-hearted person, a passionate student of his subject and a real endurance test for Viru "Virus" Sahastrabuddhe, the rector of University, which leads them with old-fashioned ideas, according to which nothing can be more important than the constant memorization of the school material, so that most students hardly want to understand the true meaning of engineering studies for the buffalo.

Rancho and his two friends form an impossible trio and spend their free time doing boisterous foolishness and laughing. As soon as Rancho's somewhat more modern perspective on learning turns, which is made clear by its regular exclusion from classes and remarks to Sahastrabuddhe, who shortly afterwards begins to target the three students, Farhan and Raju hold back. The reason for this is their poorer living conditions at home. They see the ICE as the only way out and prefer not to step out of line. In the course of the plot, however, it becomes clear that Farhan is a little more relaxed.

One day the trio bursts into a wedding and secretly gets something to eat. Only too late do they notice that it is about the wedding of Sahastrabuddhe's daughter. They are confronted by him personally, whereby Rancho catches the eye of the Rector's younger daughter, Pia, a doctor, who is in a relationship at the time. Raju then turns his back on the trio for fear of being suspended and moves into the neighboring room, where Chatur, a student who, due to his learning mentality, lives in perfect harmony with Sahastrabuddhe, has lived alone.

Now Farhan and Rancho try to convince Raju that Rancho is not too bad with his view. Chatur, who, because of his loyalty to the school system, is appointed spokesman for an important visit by the education minister, is harmed. Together, Rancho and Farhan ruin Chatur's speech by replacing certain words with vulgar ones to show Raju what can happen if everything is just memorized. The speech turns into a laughable disaster, and Chatur swears in an argument with Rancho that he will meet again after ten years to see who will be more successful.

Raju leaves all of this cold. He only reconciles with his friends when Rancho and Pia save his father's life. The pretty daughter of "Virus" has already separated from her quirky fiancé Suhas, which was actually brought about by Rancho, as this Pia has shown with finesse that Suhas wants to put the finishing touches to his richness through Pia, and ultimately rightly so . Everything indicates that Pia and Rancho are getting closer and closer.

Some time later, Raju is seriously injured in a suicide attempt. When Viru Sahastrabuddhe threatens to expel him after a particularly difficult prank if he doesn't whistle his friends, he jumps out of the office window. As if by a miracle, he survived. This is also the time when Raju and Farhan, motivated by Rancho, acknowledge their true interests. Farhan finally succeeds in making it clear to his parents that photography is his true passion. Raju applies directly to customer service after his recovery. Both manage to get by. They throw their pants down in front of Rancho in gratitude. Rancho confesses his love for Pia, emphasizing several times that for some mysterious reason they could never get married.

Sahastrabuddhe, completely beside himself with anger after this about turn, vows not to let Raju finish. He creates a special test for Raju, which should make it impossible for him to pass. Pia, drunk, gives Rancho the key to her father's workplace and tells him to get Raju's exam to make up for this injustice. Rancho is caught red-handed with Farhan and the trio is expelled from school immediately. Pia then flees to the hospital with her employees. A tropical storm breaks out. Just as Rancho, Farhan and Raju are about to leave the school grounds under heavy rain, they discover Pia's older sister Mona, who is in labor pains for her new child. However, the streets are no longer passable by ambulance. Before "Virus" can offer resistance, they carry Mona into the school lobby. Through webcam transmission with Pia, they seem to initially only succeed in giving birth to a stillbirth with the help of a suction bell constructed from a vacuum cleaner and powered by car batteries due to a power failure. When Rancho is able to resuscitate the newborn, cheers break out across campus. Viru Sahastrabuddhe immediately revokes the expulsion from school.

The rest of the time the students spend with the principal like good friends. Farhan and Raju persist. Rancho is the best of his year at the end of the year before Chatur. But then Rancho disappears without another word.

Ten years later, Farhan Qureshi and Raju Rastogi received a call from their comrade at the time, Chatur Ramalingam, who reminded them of the bet that ten years after the messed up speech he would be more successful than Rancho. Delighted to see Rancho again, Farhan breaks off a flight and drives back to the ICE with Raju. The disappointment is bitter. Chatur also has only vague clues as to where Rancho might be. The feature film actually begins with that. The time they spent together on the ICE are flashbacks divided into sections.

You and Chatur go looking for Rancho. The first place is Shimla , where Chatur found Rancho in a photo. The shock runs deep after their visit to Shimla, because they never knew the real Ranchoddas Shamaldas Chanchad, only his servant boy, who had to obtain a diploma for his master because of his excellent academic ability. After the handover he left an address and then disappeared from Ranchodda's life ("... One day two idiots will come looking for me."). With a bang, Farhan and Raju manage to get Chatur to travel with them to the address, because they need his car. Happy to see the old Rancho again, they call Pia and find out that she will be married to Suhas on the same day. She apparently had no hope after Rancho's disappearance and has returned to Suhas. Farhan looks at his watch and decides to go on an adventure. While Chatur is shouting that he urgently needs to go to a certain Mr. Phunsukh Wangdu in order to negotiate over four hundred patents with him and possibly conclude agreements, he is tied up and gagged and thrown onto the back of the car. Farhan and Raju infiltrate the wedding, whereupon Pia willingly flees with them, although they do not know whether Rancho is already married. You will find Rancho in Ladakh , where he has built an excellent primary school that introduces children to engineering techniques in a practical way from an early age. He and Pia find each other again. There are also violent blows and hugs between old friends, while the now liberated Chatur wants to force Rancho to sign a declaration of defeat. After all, he is the advisor to a large company. It turns out that Rancho is none other than Phunsukh Wangdu, and Chatur's arrogance turns into submissiveness.

reception

The film grossed around $ 11 million in cinemas worldwide, including $ 6.5 million in India.

“The supergiga box office hit may not be a masterpiece. Rather, based loosely on the novel "Five Point Someone" by Chetan Bhagat, Rajkumar Hirani created a heterogeneous, sometimes surprisingly bumpy narrated work, which, however, comes out on top in a number of individual scenes. If you are in such a scene, "3 Idiots" is a real treat. The fact that you go through hang-ups from time to time, that the messages are not properly formulated, that Boman is playing a caricature, that Aamir is too old and that the songs themselves have little sing-along character - that is what you tend to ignore. You enjoy the moment, the scene, the game, the fun. It is contageous. And millions of Indians thought the same way. "
