Doordarshan Bhawan

Doordarshan ( Hindi : m., दूरदर्शन, dūrdarśan , Durdarshan ; German: "television") denotes Indian public television , and consists of the Hindi / Sanskrit words dur (fern) and darshan (view, view). The meaning of the word therefore corresponds exactly to German television and the Greek - Latin televisio .

With Doordarshan (short DD ) is also meant the state television station, which is increasingly in recent years, competition from private channels such as Star TV and Zee TV got.

history

DD began broadcasting on September 15, 1959 as part of All India Radio (AIR) in New Delhi with one hour each Tuesday and Friday evenings; from 1965 it was broadcast daily. A television center was established in Bombay in 1972, in 1973 in Srinagar and Amritsar (here in competition with Pakistan Television from Lahore) and in 1975 in Calcutta , Madras and Lucknow .

In 1976 DD was organizationally separated from AIR and received its own general director (1976-79 PV Krishnamoorthy). 1982 started before the beginning of the IX. Asian Games in the country of color television , 1982/83 distribution via Insat and a second program in 1984 ( DD 2 ; 1993 DD Metro ; since 2003 DD News ). In 1997 AIR and DD were merged to form Prasar Bharati .

Programs

Today there are six national programs: in addition to DD National and DD News, there are DD Sports (1998), DD Bharati (2002; culture), DD Urdu (2006) and DD Kisan (2015; rural areas). There is also the international program DD India (started in 1995 as DD World ) as well as numerous regional programs and programs for individual states. 34 programs are broadcast via satellite. Production takes place in 67 centers (“Kendras”) across the country. In addition, DD is involved in the dissemination of educational programs such as Gyandarshan ( IGNOU ) and Vyas (University Grants Commission - Consortium for Educational Communication, UGC-CEC).
