Srinagar ( Kashmiri سِری نَگَر Sirī Nagar , Urdu سری نگر DMG Srī Nagar , Dogri and Hindi Ś Śrīnagar ) is a city ( Municipal Corporation ) in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir . It is the administrative seat of the Srinagar District and in the summer months also the capital of the Union Territory .
The city has about 1.2 million inhabitants (2011 census). Srinagar is located at an altitude of 1730 m above sea level, centrally in the high basin of Kashmir , on the Jhelam River , which drains the entire basin.
History and sights
A first settlement in the area of today's Srinagar was established in the 3rd century BC. Founded by King Asoka . The city of Srinagar itself was founded by King Pravarasena at the turn of the Christian era .
The university town of Srinagar ( University of Kashmir ) has been an important tourist destination since the 19th century. It is sometimes compared to Venice because of its many waterways and is known for its houseboats, which serve as tourist accommodation. In the city and around Lake Dal there are several landscaped gardens that date from the time of the Mughal emperors . Efforts are being made to add these gardens to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites .
On the northwestern bank of Dal Lake is the great Hazrat Bal Mosque. The mosque has a special meaning for Muslims as it is considered to be the repository of a hair from the beard of the Prophet Mohammed .
The 371 BC The Hindu mountain temple Shankaracharya (also: Takht-e-Suleiman), which is located at 3352 m altitude on the mountain of the same name within sight of the city, is the oldest shrine in Kashmir .
Srinagar is affected by the Kashmir conflict , but the Federal Foreign Office only advises against traveling by land. The headquarters of the UN observer mission UNMOGIP , which monitors the ceasefire line between India and Pakistan, is located in Srinagar .
In 1908 Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad claimed to be the promised Messiah and Mahdi of the end times and that God had told him that Jesus of Nazareth had been buried under the name of Yuz Asaf in Srinagar. This thesis has been included in esoteric literature several times since then, and the town is home to the Rozabal Shrine , known as the tomb of Jesus Christ .

Srinagar is connected to Jammu by National Highway 1A and to Leh by National Highway 1D .
The Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport in Budgam district is located twelve kilometers south of the city. It is operated by the Indian military, but also offers numerous civil, national flights. A planned connection to foreign airports never came about.
Srinagar Station is on the Jammu to Baramulla railway line , which runs north-south through Jammu and Kashmir. A connection of the route to the national railway network of India is (status: 2019) in planning.
economy
Traditional carpets , copper and silver goods, as well as leather and silk products are made in the town. Tourism plays a role.

The wettest month is March. The average annual rainfall is 674.3 mm.
