The Srinagar district ( Urdu :ضلع سری نگر) is a district in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir .

In 2007 the northern part was detached and since then has formed the newly established Ganderbal district . The district administration is seated in Srinagar .

The Srinagar district is centrally located in the Kashmir Valley . The district has an area of ​​1979 km² and 1,236,829 inhabitants (2011 census). The population density is 625 inhabitants per square kilometer.

In the district lies the 21 square kilometer Dal Lake with a rich fauna. Other attractions include the Hazratbal Shrine, the Shankaracharya Temple (probably the oldest in Kashmir) and the Great Mosque (Jama Masjid) .
