The Kishtwar District ( Urdu :किश्तवाड़) is a district in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir .

The administrative center, the city of Kishtwar , is 235 km from Jammu , the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Kishtwar District is located in the east of Jammu and Kashmir. It includes the so-called Kishtwar Himalayas . The river Chanab flows through the south of Kishtwar . In the northeast of the district is the Kishtwar National Park . Forestry is an important economic factor in Kishtwar.

Other neighboring districts within Jammu and Kashmir are Anantnag in the northwest and Doda in the southwest. In the southeast it borders on the in the state of Himachal Pradesh located district Chamba and the union territory in Ladakh located Kargil in the east and northeast.

The district has an area of ​​7737 square kilometers and 230,696 inhabitants (2011 census). The population density is 30 people per square kilometer.

The district of Kishtwar was created on April 1, 2007, when it was separated from what was then the Doda district .
