Kishtwar is a small town ( Municipal Committee ) in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir .
It forms the administrative seat of the district of the same name . In the 2011 census, the population was 14,865. 69% of the population are Muslims , just under 30% Hindus .
The city of Kishtwar is located in the Himalayas at an altitude of 1693 m 100 km northeast of Jammu . It is located on a plateau east of the Chanab river valley . The National Highway 1B runs through the city and connects it with the city of Doda , located southwest downstream, and via the Sinthan Top with the city of Anantnag , located northwest in the Kashmir Valley .
