Anantnag (sometimes also called Islamabad ; Kashmiri : اننتناگ, Anaṁtnāg , "Square of the springs and lakes") is a city ( Municipal Council ) in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the administrative seat of the district of the same name .
In the 2011 census, the population of Anantnag was 108,505. Around 160,000 people lived in the agglomeration at that time.

The city is located in the southeast of the Kashmir Valley at an altitude of 1598 m . The city extends between the upper reaches of the Jhelam in the south and its tributary Lidder in the north.
