The University of Kashmir ( Kashmiri : دانشگاه کشمیر, Hindi कश्मीर विश्वविद्यालय ) is a university in Jammu and Kashmir , India . It is located on the west side of Dal Lake in Srinagar .

campus

The origin of the University of Kashmir is the Jammu and Kashmir University in 1948. In 1969 this was divided into two separate universities: the University of Kashmir in Srinagar and the University of Jammu in Jammu . The University of Kashmir has focused on the Hazratbal area since its inception, spanning three contiguous locations: Amar Singh Bagh, Naseem Bagh and Mirza Bagh. The campus covers an area of over 1.06 square kilometers. The university is the largest university in Jammu and Kashmir by the number of full-time students. Initially, many facilities were set up in the Naseem Bagh area, but as the university decided to keep this part as a sanctuary, they have been relocated to other parts of the campus. Since April 2013, the Zakura campus has been built near the Hazratbal campus to enable the university to expand. Mirza Bagh or "University Town" is the residential area of the university employees.

In 2002, Vice Chancellor JAK Tareen presented the idea of expanding postgraduate courses to include colleges and establishing branches of the university in Ananthang and Baramulla . He managed to get money from the prime minister for the project of the new branches as well as the expansion of the existing campus. The foundation stones for the expansion were laid by Mufti Muhammad Sayeed . However, it then took a long time to set up the new branches and they were not put into operation until 2008/2009. On the main campus, the new buildings for social sciences, natural sciences, media studies, the examination building and the distance learning building were built between 2001 and 2004 from the Prime Minister's special funds. A conference center with 200 seats was also built. The university's south campus in Fateh Garh, Anantnag went into operation in October 2008. The north campus in Delina, Baramulla opened in December 2009. Three more branches in Kupwara , Kargil and Leh will be opened.

Course offer

The university has 12 faculties, 47 academic departments, 21 academic centers, 36 colleges and six other private institutes under its supervision. The two largest faculties in terms of student numbers are the Law Faculty and the Business School . The Law Faculty is the university's oldest department and offers three courses: LLB, LLM and BA, LLB (Hons). A postgraduate course in human rights is also offered. The faculty publishes a peer-reviewed research journal, the Kashmir University Law Review (KULR). The business school offers an Integrated MBA (IMBA) and a Master of Tourism and Hospitality Management (MTHM). Media Education Research Center (MERC) graduates work at local and national television and print media. In the master's program “Kashmir and South Asia Studies” offered by the UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Institute Of Kashmir Studies since 2013 under new guidelines from the South Asia Foundation (SAF) and the University of Kashmir, local and foreign students conduct research on Kashmir from different perspectives.

In March 2016, the university management announced that it wanted to allow significantly more students to study in the future (up to 7,000 per year instead of the previous 3500 admissions for around 17,000 applications). In doing so, she wants to help prevent so many aspiring academics from migrating from Jammu and Kashmir.

Scholarships

The university awards scholarships to two students with the best academic performance in different subjects. There are also four research grants and a support fund for students with very good academic achievements from low-income families.
