Kupwara ( Urdu اردو) is a city ( Municipal Committee ) in the northwest of the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir .
It forms the administrative seat of the district of the same name . In the 2011 census, the population was 21,771. The gender distribution is 440 women per 1,000 men. Almost 85% are Muslims , 12.8% Hindus .
The city of Kupwara is located at the northern end of the Kashmir Valley on the banks of the Talri at an altitude of 1577 m . A road connects Kupwara with Sopore, 35 km south .
To the east of Kupwara is the Lolab Valley .
