Roland Anthony Oliver

Roland Anthony Oliver (* thirtieth March 1923 in Srinagar , Kashmir , Empire India ; † 9. February 2014 in Frilsham , Berkshire , England ) was a British historian and professor of African History, the significant impact on the development of African Studies in the UK had .

Life

Oliver studied from 1941 to 1948 at King's College in Cambridge at the University of Cambridge . His degree Dr. phil. He graduated from the University of London , where he taught at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in the years up to his retirement in 1986, most recently as Professor of African History. His teaching activities influenced future scientists for African studies worldwide.

Oliver made several research trips to Africa and visited the continent almost every year. Together with John Donnelly Fage he is founding editor of the Journal of African History and editor of the eight-volume Cambridge History of Africa , which was published from 1975 to 1986. At the same time his Oxford History of East Africa was published .

He worked as a visiting professor at the then University of Brussels before it was divided according to language borders, at Northwestern University in Illinois in the USA and at Harvard University in New Haven , Connecticut , USA.
