John Donnelly Fage

John Donnelly Fage (born June 3, 1921 in Teddington , Middlesex , today part of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames , England ; † August 6, 2002 in Machynlleth , County Powys , Wales , Great Britain ) was a British historian specializing in history Africa .

Life

Fage passed all the exams at Magdalene College of the University of Cambridge and submitted the work The Achievement of Self-Government in Southern Rhodesia 1898-1923 for a doctorate in 1949 . He then went to the institution in Accra on what was then the Gold Coast, later called the University of Ghana . This was particularly associated with the University of London . There he taught for ten years until 1959 and was particularly concerned with the Atlantic slave trade .

Fage taught at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London from 1959 to 1963 . From 1963 to 1984 he taught and researched at the University of Birmingham , where he set up the Center of West African Studies (CWAS). In years of collaboration with Roland Anthony Oliver , he published the eight-volume Cambridge History of Africa at Cambridge University Press from 1975 to 1986 , after the two researchers' Short History of Africa , published in 1962 by Penguin Books , had been a great success in several editions and was published in twelve languages. Fage and Oliver co-founded The Journal of African History .
