The Magdalene College [ mɔːdlɪn kɒlɪdʒ ] is an important college of the University of Cambridge and was in 1428 as a hostel of the Benedictine founded. It is located on the bridge over the Cam, which gave the city its name.
history
In 1428 Heinrich VI. Benedictine monks the privilege to build a shelter for the brothers at this point consisting of Fenland , came to canon law to study. Obviously, the location has always been a popular settlement site, with Roman and even Iron Age settlement remains. The four monasteries Crowland, Ely, Ramsey and Walden each set up separate wings for their students in the south of the college.
Between 1472 and 1483 the renaming of "Monk's Hostel" in "Buckingham College" must have taken place in honor of the patron of the college, the 2nd Duke of Buckingham Henry Stafford . With his execution for high treason, the college also suffered a deep blow. During this time, lay people who were able to rent accommodation from the monks were presumably also admitted ; Then as now, it includes shared meals and accommodation.
In 1650 Samuel Pepys came to the college, who attracted attention due to his eccentric behavior. On his death in 1703, he transferred his house and the library inside to the faculty, the selection of 3000 volumes of which are shaped by his character: they are sorted and numbered according to size.
Since the 20th century women have also been allowed to study at the university. With 48% women, Magdalene has an approximately equal distribution between the sexes. Since 1986 it has also been possible to live outside the college.
